Interactive Brokers in the UAE: Setup, Funding and Safety
By Gianluca Sidoti, Independent Financial Advisor
Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is available to UAE residents and suits long-term investors who are comfortable doing their own paperwork, but the most important thing to check is which IBKR company holds your account. The entity decides your regulator, your custody arrangement and the protection you have if the broker fails.
This is an independent walk-through, not a review sponsored by the broker. I receive nothing from Interactive Brokers and the links are not affiliate links. Part of the broader guide: How to invest in the UAE as an expat. To compare it with other regulated options, see Best brokers in the UAE.
Which Interactive Brokers company will you deal with?
Interactive Brokers operates through several legal entities, and the one on your agreement is the one that counts.
In October 2024 Interactive Brokers opened an office in the Dubai International Financial Centre. It operates as Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited (DIFC Branch), regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) under a Category 4 licence. The head office, Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited, is authorised and regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. The branch page says it arranges brokerage and custody services and serves individuals, family offices, wealth managers and institutions.
Third-party reviewers report a split role: the DIFC branch receives orders, while a different group company holds money and assets in custody under a separate client agreement. Other residents report holding their account with Interactive Brokers LLC, the US entity. I could not confirm from IBKR's own pages which entity a given UAE resident is assigned, so read the client agreement before you fund the account and write the names down. How the setup works
You apply online, answer identity and suitability questions, and fund the account by bank transfer. The exact documents and the time it takes depend on your nationality, your residence documents and the entity assigned to you.
- Start the application on the Interactive Brokers site, or request the DIFC branch application link through its contact form.
- Provide identification, proof of UAE residence and the information the form asks about your income, assets and experience.
- Complete the tax forms. Non-US individuals normally certify their non-US status (Form W-8BEN). Read it carefully: it affects the tax withheld on US dividends.
- Wait for approval, then link your UAE bank account.
- Transfer money and wait for it to be credited before placing any order.
Funding and currency
Bank transfer is the usual route, and USD is the safest assumption for the deposit currency. IBKR has said it supports funding and trading in up to 28 currencies, including AED, but a reviewer reports AED did not appear in his deposit options in August 2026, so availability varies by account. The sending bank can charge for the transfer. Check both sides' fees before you move a large amount.
In December 2025 Interactive Brokers announced it was adding access to UAE exchange-listed equities. Whether you can use it depends on your account, so check the market list in your client portal.
What it costs
The headline fee is low, but the minimum per order is what matters on small amounts. For US shares, IBKR's published fixed pricing is USD 0.005 per share with a USD 1 minimum per order. Tiered pricing starts at USD 0.0035 per share with a USD 0.35 minimum. Third-party fees can be added.
For example, buying 100 shares at USD 100 (USD 10,000, about AED 36,725) costs USD 1 on the fixed plan: 0.01% of the amount, about AED 3.67. A fund's ongoing charge usually costs far more over time than the commission. Reviewers also report no account minimum and no inactivity fee; confirm both in your account documents. Market data subscriptions, bank transfer charges and currency conversion are separate.
How safe is your money?
Safety depends on the entity: broker failure and market losses are different risks, and no scheme covers market losses. If your account is with the US entity, SIPC protection applies up to USD 500,000, including USD 250,000 for cash, according to a third-party source. SIPC covers the failure of the broker, not falling prices. For the DIFC branch, ask which protections apply and where your assets are held, and get the answer in writing.
Whatever the entity, use two-factor authentication, keep your login details private, and never let anyone trade your account on your behalf unless they are licensed to do so.
Things to check before choosing US-listed funds
Buying US-listed funds can create a US estate tax exposure for non-US residents. The IRS says a nonresident's executor must file Form 706-NA when US-situated assets exceed USD 60,000 at death, and it lists stock of US corporations as such an asset. The National reports that US-domiciled ETFs may also be exposed, which is why many non-US investors prefer funds domiciled elsewhere. Read ETFs for UAE residents and ask a tax adviser before you invest.
Questions people ask
Can UAE residents open an Interactive Brokers account?
Yes. Residents can apply online, and the DIFC branch accepts applications from individuals as well as institutions. Eligibility and the entity assigned depend on your nationality, documents and the questions you answer. Read the client agreement for the name of the company that holds your account before you send any money.
Is Interactive Brokers regulated in the UAE?
Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited (DIFC Branch) is regulated by the DFSA under a Category 4 licence. That does not mean every account is held there: UAE residents may be assigned another group company. The regulator and the protection scheme follow the entity on your agreement, so check it in writing.
What is the minimum deposit at Interactive Brokers?
Reviewers report no account minimum for individual accounts, and Interactive Brokers does not state a minimum on its DIFC page. The practical limit is cost: a minimum fee per order and bank transfer charges weigh more on small balances. Check your own account documents, because terms can change by entity and account type.
Is Interactive Brokers safe for expats?
Interactive Brokers is a large listed broker, but safe depends on the entity and on you. Check which regulator and which protection scheme apply to your account, understand that no scheme covers investment losses, and avoid concentrated or leveraged positions. Most expat losses come from behaviour and product choice, not from the broker.
Does Interactive Brokers charge a monthly fee?
Reviewers report no custody fee of its own and no inactivity fee, but market data subscriptions are optional paid extras and third parties can charge fees. Confirm the current fee schedule in your account before you fund it. Fees change, and the schedule depends on the entity and plan.
