Forex and Gold Trading from the UAE: Risks and Options

By Gianluca Sidoti, Independent Financial Advisor

Forex and gold trading are legal in the UAE through licensed firms, and you can approach them in three ways: trade yourself, use an automated strategy, or hold gold without leverage. The first is the hardest: most retail traders who use leverage lose money. The right choice depends on your time, your capital and what you want gold or currencies to do in your portfolio.

This page explains how leveraged trading works, what the evidence says, what automation can and cannot do, and the simpler alternative. It is general information, not advice for your situation. Part of the broader guide: How to invest in the UAE as an expat.

Three ways to get exposure to currencies and gold

The three approaches differ in effort, cost and the kind of risk you take.

ApproachWhat it takesMain catch
Trade yourself with a licensed brokerTime, a method, discipline and a risk planLeverage magnifies losses; most retail accounts lose money
Automated or copy strategyChoose a strategy, fund your own account, monitorPast results do not predict future ones; check fees, the broker and the drawdown history
Hold gold without leverage (physical gold, gold funds)Money you can leave alone for yearsNo income; the price can stay flat or fall for years

How leveraged forex and gold trading works

Leverage lets you control a position larger than your deposit, which multiplies gains and losses by the same factor. With 10:1 leverage, USD 1,000 controls a position of USD 10,000. A 1% move against you costs USD 100, which is 10% of your deposit. A 10% move wipes it out.

Three costs apply on top: the spread (the gap between buying and selling prices), overnight financing on positions held open, and sometimes commission. These costs are paid whether you win or lose.

Gold and major currencies are liquid, but they can move sharply on news, and prices can jump past your stop-loss level (this is called slippage).

What the evidence says

European rules require brokers to publish the share of retail accounts that lose money on leveraged products, and the published figures have mostly been between 60% and 80%, depending on the broker. That summary comes from a 2020 analysis of broker disclosures and is not specific to the UAE. It does not mean nobody profits. It means that without an edge, a method and strict risk limits, the odds are against you.

If you decide to trade yourself, treat the money as risk capital: an amount you can lose without changing your life. Use a licensed broker and check the entity, as explained in how to check a broker.

Automated and copy strategies

Automated trading follows rules written in advance, and copy trading mirrors those trades into your own broker account. The appeal is discipline: a system does not panic or overtrade. It does not remove the risk of loss, because the rules can stop working when the market changes.

Before you use any automated provider, ask:

  1. Which instruments and which strategies, and what is the maximum drawdown (the largest fall from a peak) so far, defined how?
  2. Which broker holds my account, who regulates that entity, and who has access to my money?
  3. What is the fee, when is it charged, and is there a high-water mark (no new fee until you recover previous losses)?
  4. How long is the track record, and is it audited or just reported?
  5. Can I stop the strategy and withdraw at any time?

Advertised returns on any platform deserve scepticism, including mine. Look at the period, the account size and whether the figures include fees.

How Hedgebra Trading works

Hedgebra Trading copies automated strategies into your own brokerage account, so your capital stays with the broker and not with me. I run it alongside this content, so treat what follows as a disclosure, not a recommendation.

  • Strategies. Automated strategies on currencies and gold, built around Reginald, the trading system of TraDetector.
  • Fees. Access is free. A 20% performance fee applies to net profits, calculated with a high-water mark, so no fee is charged in periods without profit. The fee is paid monthly.
  • Minimum. The page states a deposit above USD 1,000.
  • Custody. The page states that Hedgebra does not have access to your money, which stays in your brokerage account.
  • Risk. It is high risk and you can lose money. No result is guaranteed.

Ask which broker holds your account and who regulates it before you deposit, as you would with any provider. Details: Hedgebra Trading.

Gold without leverage

If you want gold as a long-term holding, you do not need to trade it. The simplest routes are physical gold from a licensed dealer and gold funds through a broker. Gold pays no income, so the return comes only from the price, which can be flat or negative for long periods.

If you buy a gold fund, check where it is domiciled and what it costs each year, as you would for any fund. See ETFs for UAE residents. Many long-term investors keep gold as a small part of a diversified portfolio, not the core.

Questions people ask

Is forex trading legal in the UAE?

Yes, through firms licensed for it: onshore by the Capital Market Authority, in the DIFC by the DFSA, and in ADGM by the FSRA. Dealing with an unlicensed firm exposes you to losses with no regulator to turn to. Check the entity and its permitted activities in the regulator's register before you deposit money.

Can I trade gold from the UAE?

Yes. You can buy physical gold from dealers, hold gold through funds, or trade gold with leverage through a licensed broker. They are different things. Physical gold and funds are investments you hold; leveraged gold trading is a short-term bet where losses can exceed what you expected. Choose according to your horizon and risk.

How much money do I need to start forex trading?

Some licensed brokers accept deposits from about USD 20 to USD 100, but a small deposit leaves no room for mistakes or costs. Automated services set their own minimums: Hedgebra Trading requires a deposit above USD 1,000. Start with money you can afford to lose, and increase the size only after you understand how the strategy behaves.

Does automated trading make money?

Not reliably. An automated strategy executes rules without emotion, but it can lose money, especially when markets change. Judge it by its maximum drawdown, its fees and the length and audit of its track record, not by an advertised monthly return. No provider can guarantee profits.

What is the difference between copy trading and automated trading?

Automated trading means a program places trades by fixed rules. Copy trading means your account mirrors the trades of another trader or system. Some services combine both: a rule-based strategy whose trades are copied into your own account. In both cases you keep the market risk and pay the provider's fees.
